It’s the final the tournament deserved. On Sunday, July 19, 2026, Spain face Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (kickoff 3:00pm ET) with the World Cup on the line — European champions against the holders, a golden generation against the greatest player of his generation.
Two very different roads
Spain got here with control. Their 2–0 semifinal win over France was a masterclass — Mikel Oyarzabal from the penalty spot, Pedro Porro with the second — and it followed a pattern: keep the ball, move the opponent, and pick the moment. It’s their first World Cup Final since they won it all in 2010.
Argentina got here with nerve. A 3–2 comeback against Egypt, a 3–1 extra-time win over Switzerland, and a 2–1 semifinal against England in which Lionel Messi assisted Lautaro Martínez for the winner. The holders have lived on the edge — and thrived there.
The tactical battle
Spain will want the ball, and lots of it. Rodri and Pedri set the tempo, Lamine Yamal stretches the pitch, and the plan is to make Argentina chase shadows for 90 minutes. Argentina will happily give up possession if it means one clean transition — one Messi pass, one Lautaro run. Control versus the decisive instant: that’s the final in a sentence.
The X-factors
- Lamine Yamal (Spain): at 18, capable of unlocking any defence on his own.
- Lionel Messi (Argentina): 39, in his farewell World Cup, and still the man for the biggest moments. His story →
- The midfield: if Rodri and Pedri dominate, Spain win. If Argentina break the lines, the game opens up.
