Alex Freeman
Defender · Villarreal CF
Alex Freeman moved from Orlando City to Villarreal in January 2026 on a six-year deal through 2032, a club-record Homegrown sale for the Lions, and is now a La Liga right-back for the Yellow Submarine.
Career
An Orlando City academy product and son of Super Bowl-winning wide receiver Antonio Freeman, he had only three MLS appearances before 2025. That year he took the starting right-back job, scored six league goals, made the MLS All-Star team and Best XI, and won MLS Young Player of the Year.
The USMNT debut came in May 2025 against Turkey; he finished the year with 13 caps and two goals in a 5–1 over Uruguay. Orlando sold him in January 2026 rather than lose him on a free at year-end: a reported $4 million up front, $3 million in add-ons, plus a sell-on clause.
How they play
Villarreal’s own announcement called out physical power and attacking projection from the right flank, with the athletic range to step into more advanced positions. He is an attack-minded full-back who scores unusually often for the role.
Where they are now
Transfermarkt lists him at Villarreal through 30 June 2032. Orlando’s 29 January 2026 statement remains the primary club-side record of the move. He was already in Spain well before the 2026 World Cup.
