Alexander Schlager is Austria's World Cup goalkeeper, signed by Werder Bremen on 10 July 2026 after three seasons as Red Bull Salzburg's first choice.

Career

A Salzburg academy product, he had loans at Grödig and Floridsdorfer AC before 152 league games at LASK from 2017 to 2023. He returned to Red Bull Salzburg in May 2023 on a deal originally running to 2027.

Werder announced him on 10 July 2026 after a medical that Friday, with financial terms undisclosed. Transfermarkt lists a contract through 30 June 2029. He is competing with Karl Hein for the No.1 shirt.

A 6 ft 2 in, right-footed shot-stopper who commands his box; Austria started him in all four 2026 World Cup matches, including games against Argentina and Spain.

Where they are now

He joined Werder Bremen on 10 July 2026. When Hein picked up a muscular problem, Schlager was lined up for the cup tie against Lüneburger SK; coach Daniel Thioune still named Hein as the planned Bundesliga starter at Freiburg on 30 August if fit.
