Fernandez set up three goals to top Chelsea's assist chart as they beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 to win the inaugural expanded FIFA Club World Cup in July 2025, making him the only active player to hold current World Champion status at both club and country level heading into the 2026 tournament.

At the World Cup itself he scored a 92nd-minute winner to send Argentina past Egypt into the quarterfinals, then scored the equalizer in Argentina's dramatic 2-1 semifinal win over England after Anthony Gordon had given England the lead.

The final against Spain ended badly for him personally: Fernandez received a direct red card for a dangerous tackle on Pau Cubarsi, leaving Argentina to play the rest of the match a man down before Spain's extra-time winner sealed a 1-0 defeat.

Fernandez is a deep-lying playmaker who dictates tempo from a double pivot, with late-arriving runs into the box -- both his Egypt and England goals at the World Cup came from exactly that kind of forward burst rather than a set-piece or rebound.
