Shogo Taniguchi stayed at Sint-Truiden for a third season after the World Cup, turning down other offers to remain captain at Stayen.
Career
Nine seasons and 377 appearances at Kawasaki Frontale ended in 2022. He spent 18 months at Al-Rayyan in Qatar, scoring once, then signed for Sint-Truiden on 19 July 2024 and scored his first Belgian goal that September at Beerschot.
Het Belang van Limburg reported on 27–29 July 2026 that the 35-year-old Japan international had agreed to stay for a third season after ‘a number of enthusiastic offers’ following the World Cup. Transfermarkt still lists him in STVV’s 2026–27 squad at number 5.

A right-footed centre-back and organiser, now STVV’s on-pitch leader. FotMob’s 2026–27 notes include Europa League qualifying minutes; GioScore has him with a goal in four appearances at the start of this season.
Where they are now
Sint-Truiden sat 12th in the Jupiler Pro League after two matches of 2026–27. Taniguchi remains in the squad that also includes fellow Japanese players such as Ryotaro Ito and Leo Kokubo.
