Yūto Nagatomo is Japan's veteran full-back at FC Tokyo, named in the 2026 World Cup squad with a chance to become the first Asian player at five World Cups.
Career
A Meiji University graduate, he broke through at FC Tokyo, then spent more than a decade in Europe with Cesena, Inter Milan (over 200 appearances), Galatasaray and Marseille.
He returned to FC Tokyo on 12 September 2021 when his Marseille deal expired. The club announced a contract renewal on 8 August 2026; Transfermarkt lists the deal through June 2027.
How they play
A 5 ft 7 in, both-footed full-back who can play either flank; at 39 he is used as a starter and as a closer, and as a dressing-room leader for Hajime Moriyasu's Japan.
Where they are now
He has eight J1 appearances in 2026. RotoWire noted on 2 June 2026 that a fifth World Cup would make him the first Asian player to appear at five tournaments, after 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022.

After a Cesena loan he became a regular at Inter Milan, making more than 200 appearances across seven seasons before Galatasaray and Marseille.
