Rodri: The Least Spectacular Player Who Could Decide the Final

When Spain and Argentina walk out at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, most eyes will be on Lionel Messi playing what he has already called his final World Cup, or on Lamine Yamal, eighteen years old and rewriting what a teenage forward can do on this stage. Rodri will not be either of those stories. He will not dribble past three defenders or bend one into the top corner. He plays the position that finals are supposedly won and lost around without anyone noticing it happened - and for the last three years, wherever Rodri has played, his teams have almost stopped losing.

What 'least spectacular' actually looks like

Rodri's job is to be in the right five square yards of grass, over and over, for ninety minutes. He collects the ball from the back four, plays it forward or sideways depending on which passing lane is open, and then goes and finds the next square yard before the move has even finished. When Spain lose the ball, he is usually the one who already anticipated it and is standing where the counter-attack was supposed to go. None of that produces a moment anyone replays. It produces a midfield that never looks rushed, which is a different thing from a midfield that never gets tested.

The proof is in the results, not the highlight reel

The clearest case for Rodri was made not by anything he did with the ball, but by what happened to Manchester City when he stopped being available to do it. Across Rodri's Ballon d'Or-winning 2023-24 season, City won 27 Premier League matches and drew 7 with him on the pitch - they did not lose once. In the small number of league matches he missed that season, City won once, drew none, and lost three. City conceded 0.9 goals per game with Rodri playing and 1.3 without him; they scored 2.7 with him and 1.4 without him. A single player rarely moves a team's numbers that far in the same direction on both ends of the pitch at once.

From an academy release to a club-record fee

None of this was inevitable. Atletico Madrid's academy let Rodri go in 2013, judging him too physically light for the position, and Villarreal picked him up instead. He worked his way through Villarreal's B team and into their first XI, earned a move back to Atletico in 2018, and a year later Manchester City paid a club-record £62.6 million to activate his release clause. Four Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup and the 2023 Champions League followed - Rodri scored the winning goal in that final against Inter Milan - before Euro 2024, where he was named player of the tournament as Spain won the whole thing.

When the Ballon d'Or itself was handed to him months later, the acceptance speech matched the player. Asked to explain a season that good, Rodri did not reach for a story about talent or destiny.

The injury that could have ended the story

Three months after that Euro 2024 win, in a Premier League match against Arsenal on 22 September 2024, Rodri tore his ACL and meniscus. The recovery ruled him out of essentially the entire 2024-25 season - the season in which he was, at one point, also collecting his Ballon d'Or. Pep Guardiola later admitted the return to fitness was harder than either of them expected.

I said to Rodri, maybe he's struggled to understand that this is not about six or seven months... For one year, he's been on the massage table. The body changes, the rhythm changes and everything. It's a question of time.

Rodri returned to competitive football in May 2025, and Guardiola's own forecast at the time was specific: the World Cup, not the season in between, was when Rodri would look like Rodri again.

That forecast has held up. Rodri started every one of Spain's matches at this World Cup, and against France in the semi-final in Dallas he was named man of the match with a 9/10 rating. "The heartbeat of Spain," was how one match report summarised it. "Controlled the tempo, won key duels and dictated the match from midfield." Spain won that game 2-0 and restricted France, the pre-tournament favourites, to almost nothing in open play - the kind of scoreline a defensive midfielder produces by making sure the other team never gets to play its own game.

Why Sunday still turns on him

Argentina will not try to out-pass Spain in midfield; they will try to disrupt Rodri specifically, because everything Spain do in possession is built to run through him first. Every statistic above points at the same underlying fact: teams built around Rodri do not collapse and do not get outplayed, even when nobody outside the ground could tell you what he did in the ninety minutes.
