Alphonso Davies captained co-host Canada into the 2026 World Cup after a brutal 18-month injury run — a torn ACL in March 2025, a torn muscle fibre in February 2026, then a hamstring injury in the Champions League in May — and finally featured off the bench in the round of 32.

Career

Davies tore his ACL playing for Canada in March 2025, then suffered a torn muscle fibre in February 2026 as his body readjusted to top-level football, and then damaged his left hamstring in a Bayern Munich Champions League draw with PSG in May 2026.

Despite the injury-hit buildup, Jesse Marsch named the 25-year-old in Canada's 26-man squad and handed him the captaincy for the World Cup Canada is co-hosting.

An attacking left-back with explosive pace, Davies combines dribbling, creativity and crossing with defensive recovery speed, and can also play as a winger or wing-back when needed.

Where they are now

After sitting out all three Canada group matches as an unused substitute, Davies made his first World Cup appearance of the tournament in the round-of-32 win over South Africa, coming on for the final 15 minutes.
