SpainActive

Borja Iglesias returned from Spain's 2026 World Cup title as Celta Vigo's No. 7 — the first World Cup winner to do so as a Celta player and the first Galician to win it — after a 14-goal La Liga season, his third-best in the top flight.

Career

A Santiago de Compostela-born striker, Iglesias came through Celta's system, then Espanyol and Betis (with a 2024 Leverkusen loan) before returning to Celta on loan in July 2024. He scored a squad-best 11 La Liga goals in 2024-25, including a hat-trick in a 4–3 loss at eventual champions Barcelona on 19 April 2025.

He signed a permanent two-year Celta contract on 12 August 2025. In 2025-26 he scored 14 league goals in 35 appearances, which Mundo Deportivo called his third-best Primera campaign.

Spain's 2026 World Cup squad included him; MARCA (31 July 2026) said he would rejoin Celta training on 10 August after being crowned world champion, with tributes planned in Vigo as the first Celta player and first Galician to win the tournament.

How they play

A 6 ft 2 in penalty-box striker ('El Panda') who also, Mundo Deportivo notes, tutors Celta's younger forwards. Goal.com quoted him on enjoying Iago Aspas's last seasons and competing in Europe.

Where they are now

He restarted Celta pre-season in mid-August 2026, late because of the World Cup. MLS clubs have enquired; Celta have said they will not sell him this summer and expect him to stay at least one more year (Nós Diario, 17 August 2026).
