David Alaba is a free agent after Real Madrid confirmed on 22 May 2026 that the Austria captain would leave when his contract expired, ending five injury-hit seasons at the Bernabéu.

Career

He won a decade of Bundesliga titles at Bayern Munich, then joined Real Madrid in 2021 and added two Champions Leagues and two La Liga crowns. A December 2023 ACL tear and further layoffs limited him to 15 appearances in 2025–26, with only four La Liga starts (The Athletic).

Real Madrid’s official statement of 22 May 2026 closed the chapter: 131 matches, 11 titles. Mundo Deportivo reported on 14 August 2026 that he was still unsigned, training in Germany, with Saudi clubs among the rumours.

How they play

A left-footed defender who can play centre-back or left-back and ping diagonals from deep; at Madrid he was increasingly a squad option behind Rüdiger, Huijsen, Militão and Asencio.

Where they are now

Sports Illustrated’s 19 August 2026 Madrid defensive preview treats him as having left with Carvajal. As of mid-August he had not signed for 2026–27.
