Ivan Toney earned an England recall for the 2026 World Cup after firing Al-Ahli to back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite titles in Saudi Arabia, and started the bronze-medal win over France.

Career

Toney moved from Brentford to Saudi Arabia's Al-Ahli in summer 2024, and rather than fading from view he scored 32 league goals in 32 games to finish second in the Saudi Pro League's scoring charts while winning the AFC Champions League Elite twice and the Saudi Super Cup.

That form earned him a recall to the England squad for the 2026 World Cup, with head coach Thomas Tuchel targeting his penalty-box presence and penalty-taking.

A powerful, physical number nine who is equally comfortable holding the ball up or finishing chances himself, Toney's goal return in Saudi Arabia proved a move away from the Premier League had not blunted his edge.
