United KingdomActive

John Stones joined Inter Milan on a free transfer on 30 July 2026, two years after a decade at Manchester City ended when his contract expired on 1 July.

Career

He came through Barnsley, spent three and a half seasons at Everton, then joined City in 2016 and won six Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League under Pep Guardiola. Injuries cut him to 11 Premier League starts across the last two City campaigns (The Athletic, 13 July 2026).

City confirmed in April 2026 that he would leave after ten years. He became a free agent on 1 July while still at the World Cup with England, then signed a two-year deal at Inter until 2028, reuniting with former City teammate Manuel Akanji.

How they play

A technically assured centre-back who Guardiola also used as a hybrid midfielder, stepping into midfield with the ball. Physical presence and passing range remain the selling points; availability has been the doubt.

Where they are now

He is listed in Inter’s 2026–27 squad (FotMob). Juventus, Inter and Milan had all been offered him as a free agent, with each having reservations about his injury record (The Athletic).
