Mikel Merino
Midfielder · Arsenal
Mikel Merino returned to the Premier League with Arsenal in August 2024 after six seasons at Real Sociedad. The Spanish midfielder arrived following Spain’s victory at Euro 2024.
Career
Merino’s route began with Amigo and Osasuna before taking him to Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United. He spent the 2017–18 season in Newcastle before joining Real Sociedad in July 2018.
At Sociedad he helped win the 2020 Copa del Rey. Arsenal then brought him back to England in August 2024, adding another experienced midfielder to Mikel Arteta’s squad.
How they play
The Premier League’s transfer analysis describes Merino as a ball-winning midfielder who can play alongside or provide cover for Declan Rice. His strength in aerial duels gives that midfield pairing another way to compete.
Where they are now
His Arsenal move followed a European Championship in which he scored Spain’s extra-time winner against Germany.
