Alistair Johnston is Canada's right-back at Celtic, contracted until 2029, and is out until October after a hamstring injury in the Kilmarnock match.

Career

The Vancouver-born full-back went from Vaughan Azzurri to Nashville SC and CF Montréal, then joined Celtic on 1 January 2023. His first half-season ended in a domestic treble.

He signed a five-year extension on 22 November 2024. Last season he missed 39 Celtic matches with a hamstring problem and only returned in late April 2026.

How they play

A 5 ft 11 in, right-footed overlapping full-back who can also fill in at centre-back or on the right of midfield; Celtic have used Colby Donovan and Anthony Ralston in his absence.

Where they are now

Martin O'Neill told BBC Sport on 24 August 2026 that scans point to a return some time in October. Everton's summer interest cooled after a reported £15 million bid was rejected and the latest injury ruled him out of the window.

  1. A treble in his first Celtic months2023

    Johnston scored his first Celtic goal at St Mirren on 5 March 2023 and finished the campaign with the Scottish Premiership, League Cup and Scottish Cup.

  2. Ruled out until October2026

    He went off at half-time against Kilmarnock in Celtic's second league game. O'Neill confirmed the hamstring scan on 24 August, two days before a Champions League play-off in Austria.
