Edin Džeko is Bosnia and Herzegovina's captain and record scorer, a 40-year-old striker who helped Schalke 04 back into the Bundesliga and then signed on past his 41st birthday.

Career

A Željezničar graduate, he scored heavily at Wolfsburg and Manchester City, then 150 league goals across Roma and Inter Milan. Two seasons at Fenerbahçe (46 goals) were followed by a short 2025–26 spell at Fiorentina.

Schalke signed him on a free on 22 January 2026. He scored six times in 11 second-division matches, including a debut goal against Kaiserslautern that made him the oldest scorer in 2. Bundesliga history, and the club went up.

How they play

A 6 ft 4 in target striker who still times runs in the box and links play; Schalke's staff have used him as a closer and a starter, not only as a veteran extra.

Where they are now

On 3 August 2026 he signed a one-year extension through summer 2027. He scored twice and assisted one in Schalke's 5–2 DFB-Pokal win at Halle on 25 August, with the Bundesliga return at Augsburg next.
