Guillermo Ochoa
Goalkeeper · Retired
Guillermo Ochoa retired on 22 July 2026 at 41, after a 22-year career that ended with AEL Limassol in Cyprus and a sixth World Cup appearance for Mexico.
Career
He debuted for Club América in February 2004, then became the first Mexico-born goalkeeper to play in Europe with Ajaccio in 2011. Spells at Málaga, Granada, Standard Liège, a return to América, Salernitana, AVS and finally AEL Limassol followed.
For Mexico he started three World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022), won six Gold Cups and took Olympic bronze at Tokyo 2020. The 2026 tournament, hosted in part in Mexico City, was his last; he came on in the 3–0 group win over Czechia on 24 June.
How they play
A shot-stopping keeper whose World Cup displays — especially against Brazil in 2014 — defined a generation of El Tri keepers. Reflexes and longevity, not height, were the trademark.
Where they are now
AP reported his retirement post on 22 July 2026: he hung up his gloves after turning 41. BeSoccer logs the AEL release on 1 July and the retirement on 21 July. He has not signed for another club.
