Germany's 2026 World Cup ended in the round of 32 after 120 goalless minutes and a penalty shootout loss to Paraguay -- one of the tournament's biggest upsets, and Germany's earliest World Cup exit in years.
As captain, Kimmich was blunt in the aftermath: "We fully deserved to be eliminated. We struggled badly in all three matches against teams that aren't world-class," he said, taking responsibility on behalf of the playing squad rather than the coaching staff.
He returned to a very different picture at club level, where Bayern Munich's 2025/26 season produced a Bundesliga title, the DFB-Pokal and the DFL-Supercup.
