Manuel Neuer

Goalkeeper · Bayern München

GermanyActive

Manuel Neuer retired from international football for a second time after Germany's shock Round of 32 exit to Paraguay on penalties at the 2026 World Cup, though the 40-year-old remains Bayern Munich's captain under contract through 2027.

Career

Neuer first retired from the German national team after Euro 2024 before making what he called a 'conscious decision to play one more time' at the 2026 World Cup.

At club level he has made more than 500 competitive appearances for Bayern Munich since joining from Schalke in 2011, and remains under contract at the Bundesliga champions through June 2027.

How they play

A pioneer of the modern sweeper-keeper role, Neuer combines shot-stopping with an aggressive sweeping style well outside his box and composed distribution to start attacks.

Where they are now

Germany's World Cup ended in the Round of 32 against Paraguay, a 1-1 draw after extra time that Paraguay won 4-3 on penalties -- a result Neuer called 'very painful'.

He confirmed his international retirement immediately after the defeat, saying he has 'no regrets', while his club career at Bayern continues into the new Bundesliga season.
