Mohamed Salah captained Egypt to their first-ever World Cup win before a dramatic 3-2 loss to Argentina in the round of 16, closing out a club season in which he won a record-equalling 20th Premier League title with Liverpool.

Career

Salah scored twice as Egypt beat Djibouti to seal 2026 World Cup qualification, breaking Mohamed Aboutrika's record as Egypt's all-time leading scorer in World Cup qualifiers along the way.

At the tournament he set up both of Egypt's goals against Argentina in the round of 16 — a Yasser Ibrahim header and a Mostafa Zico strike he teed up himself — as Egypt led 2-0 before Argentina scored three times in the final 11 minutes plus stoppage time to win 3-2 and end Egypt's run.

How they play

Salah's cut-inside-and-shoot move from the right flank onto his favoured left foot remains the signature that has defined a decade of Premier League defending, paired with a work rate that also makes him Liverpool's first line of pressing.

For Egypt he plays a freer, more central creative role than at Liverpool, dropping deeper to combine and create rather than purely finishing attacks.
